Petra, "rock" in translation, was a fortress and a trade city almost entirely carved in canyon. The inhabitants built houses, tombs, temples out of the natural red-rose rocks. You can reach it on foot from Siq Gorge, a passage no wider than 6 feet, and head for the Treasury or the Khaznah. Erected in 56 BC, the construction is a Greek-styled temple growing inside a 130 feet cliff.
